Brummana
gave Lebanon and the Arab world a noteworthy educational
institution Brummana High School is one of the oldest
boarding schools in the area.
Over the years boarding students from virtually all
parts of the world have attended Brummana. It was
founded in 1875 by Theophilus Waldmeier, a Swiss
missionary, who joined the Society of Friends and became
a Quaker. Waldmeier first came to Lebanon in 1867 and
was engaged as inspector of branch schools in Beirut,
the mountains and Damascus. |
|
|
In 1874, he
came to Brummana and took charge of the Quaker Girls
School. During the subsequent year he bought Birket el
Ghanem (20,000 square yards of property), changed its
name to Ayn es Salam, which in Arabic means ‘Spring of
Peace’, and was authorized by the owners, the Friend
Syrian Mission, to build the Training Home for Boys,
which now is Brummana High School. The school did not
indulge in mission activity and the students’ beliefs in
their own religions were never challenged or deprecated.
Since 1884, an executive committee appointed by the
Quakers of England is running the school successfully.
Beside BHS, Brummana has many educational institutions.
