| Al-Amal Institute for the Disabled
(Mental Retarded) |
|
Address: Ar-Rassif Street
Phone: (04) 960279 - 963330
Vice President: Mrs. Sanaa Solh
General Manager: Nassib Solh
It is the first center for the mentally retarded
in Lebanon and the Arab countries. It was
established in 1959 by Mrs. Mounira Solh who
suffered from raising her mentally retarded child,
Salem. The Institute deals since 1964 with several
Arab countries in matters of mentally retarded
children care. It was the first in Lebanon to lead
the way for the disabled to work and be productive
during the war. This non-profit-making Institute
that took good care of the disabled, continued its
activities during war time, developing industrial
projects for the disabled. The most important
were: |
 |
|
- The Bakery that provided bread to nine
surrounding villages during civil war.
- The Winter Sweater Program that was launched by
the institute in 1992 and then supported by both
Lebanese and Arab citizens, for it achieved two
main goals that are well investing the donations
and making out of the disabled a productive
individual capable of performing his social role.
According to Mrs. Shreifer (sister of former
president John Kennedy), the Winter Sweater
program turned the conception of the disabled
upside down by applying the slogan “from a
disabled to a needy”, and it is now preparing to
apply a new one: “from a disabled from Lebanon to
a needy anywhere”.
- The Institute organizes weekly trips all along
the academic year, including long trips to ski
resorts.
- It organizes as well a summer program for the
disabled as well as weekly trainings with the
Olympiad.
Financing: Ministry of Health, Ministry of Social
Affairs, Some Arab Students, contributions to
Winter Pullover Program (major financing),
celebrations.

of the municipality) and mother of Pierre Al
Achkar (current president).
Brummanian volunteer ladies, headed by Mrs. Achkar,
are personally engaged in sewing activity to
generate funds for assisting the less fortunate.
They are equally dedicated to helping families in
need (paying their children's tuition fees,
transportation or uniform) by selling their
hand-made embroideries. Therefore, a three-day

December at Printania Palace Hotel to raise money
for Christmas. On the other hand, orders are
accepted through out the year and embroideries are
delivered duly on time.

more money goes back into the community. Funds are
not restricted to sales, additionally dinners are
organised at Printania Palace Hotel during summer,
with the aim collecting donation.

Orphans |
| "Sisters of the Cross" |
|
Address: Emile Lahoud Street, Brummana.
Phone: +961 4 960 131 / 2
It is across the road from BHS. Its campus lies on
a predominating hill known as “Ruwaisseh”. It
comprises a primary school, a junior high school,
a thriving needlework department and a summer
school.
|
 |
|
In 1979, after the breakout of war, the Sisters of
the Cross could not afford the wages of the
teachers who were reluctant to continue tutoring.
As a result, the Lebanese government rented the
school, known up till now as the Official School
of Brummana. Currently, the school has around 550
students (from kindergarten to the 4th
intermediate class).
An orphanage has been founded within the convent
where 150 orphan children live, thanks to the
financial assistance of the Ministry of Social
Affairs. Furthermore, a technical school was
founded in another part of the convent; It
consists of an atelier of sewing, dressmaking,
painting…

"St Vincent de Paul" |
|
Address: Churches Street, Brummana.
Phone: +961 4 960 026
Mother Giles, a French nun, had founded in 1885,
with the cooperation of the Latin Sisters of
Charity (Lazarist Sisters), a convent, a school
and an orphanage in the former Abillamaa Serail. |
 |
|
At the turn of this century, the orphanage still
exists to provide love, serve, and assist
orphaned, abandoned and incarcerated children;
therefore the sisters direct volunteers,
donations, and financial resources to assist
orphans worldwide. They always pray that orphans'
lives will be eternally changed, and that they
will, as adults, serve in their homelands to
improve the lives of other orphans, believing that
any solution, apart from the saving knowledge of
God through Christ, is only temporary.

Lebanese Association of SOS Children Villages |
|
Website: http://www.sos.org.lb/SOSChildrensVillage.html
SOS Children's Villages revolve around the effort
to give children who have lost their parents or
who are no longer able to live with them a
permanent home and a stable environment. The SOS
Children's Village family-like structure is formed
by four basic principles: mother, brothers and
sisters, house and village.
The SOS Children's Village in Bhersaf consists of
thirteen family houses, a Village Director's
house, a Community Centre, additional buildings
and workshops. For their leisure activities the
children have at their disposal a handicraft room,
a library and a sports field. The children attend
the schools of the vicinity. A Youth Hostel and a
Girl's Residence were set up in Beirut, where
young people from both Lebanese SOS Children's
Villages are accommodated. |
